Locals formed lines at polling stations across the Iranian capital as voters came to have their say in the 13th Iranian presidential election in Tehran on Friday.

Residents needed to present their birth certificate to prove their voting eligibility and get a voting stamp.

Almost 60 million are eligible to vote in the election, of whom almost 1.4 million will be able to cast their vote for the first time.

Local resident Ghaemi spoke on his motivations to vote, saying, "If people participate in this election and there is a high turnout, and if a president is elected with high votes and support of people, we will have a better condition internationally."

"Maybe this year's election contains less enthusiasm. However, I think that many have come to vote," added another voter.

The race to the presidency is between four candidates, with all but one regarded as hardliners. Opinion polls have suggested that Ebrahim Raisi, a conservative Shia cleric, is the favourite to win.

The 13th presidential election is held simultaneously with the sixth round of city and village councils’ elections, the first mid-term for the 11th parliament’s by-election, and the second mid-term for the fifth Assembly of Experts election.
