Description

Thousands of residents of al-Mawasi, southwest of Khan Younis, have been displaced as the Israeli forces advanced on the outskirts of the area located in southern Gaza near Rafah on Friday.

Footage shows an ambulance retreating having begun to approach an Israel Defence Force (IDF) tank near the public park area in southern Khan Younis, with gunshots heard around the tent community there soon after. The video also shows residents packing up and fleeing from the area.

“It was Israel that told the displaced people to go to Khan Younis. Yesterday, we were shocked when the enemy randomly shelled the refugee tents, killing and injuring scores” said Nabil Akel, a displaced Gazan. “For Israel, there are no safe zones whatsoever,” he added.

“Suddenly, the tanks and warplanes started bombing us. What are we guilty of? If they cannot beat the resistance fighters, why do they bomb us?” said fellow refugee Reda Shahin.

“Bullets and shells were fired from everywhere, all the residents left. They have been displaced ten times, moving from one place to another,” said Ismael Hudhud, also displaced.

The Palestinian News and Information Agency (WAFA) reported that at least 11 people were killed and 40 were injured during an attack on Al-Mawasi on Friday. Local media cited an IDF comment in response denying knowledge of an attack on the area.

Many Palestinians sought refuge in the camp since Israel launched operations in Rafah in early May, with al-Mawasi specifically designated as a safe zone.

The war between Israel and Hamas broke out after the Palestinian group launched an unprecedented attack on northern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people and kidnapping more than 200 others, mostly civilians.

In turn, Israel launched a full-scale campaign of airstrikes and ground incursions, killing at least 37,765 Palestinians and injuring more than 86,429 others, as of the time of publication.
