Description

Archive footage filmed on December 1-8, 1961, features Soviet leader Leonid Brezhnev during his visit to the Republic of Sudan.

Brezhnev can be seen arriving at Khartoum airport where he was welcomed by Sudanese Prime Minister Ibrahim Abboud and other officials.

Brezhnev is also seen walking past a guard of honour and driving in an open-top car, waving to thousands of locals greeting him from the roadside, as well as from the tops of trees and buildings.

Footage also features the leader visiting the Unknown Soldier Memorial in the Sudanese capital, as well watching a football match and traditional folk performances.

During his week-long visit, Brezhnev also visited Sennar Dam on the Blue Nile river in the Al Jazirah region, and held talks with Abboud.

The two leaders signed a wide-ranging agreement, under which Moscow pledged to assist Khartoum in a number of construction projects, including food-canning plants and a large research facility for cotton production.

This archive footage is released as part of the '100 Key Events in Russia in the 20th and 21st Centuries', a project with the Russian State Documentary Film and Photo Archive (rgakfd.ru).
