Description

An alleged Israeli airstrike on a UNRWA-run school that was sheltering displaced people in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza on Saturday resulted in the death of 16 people and the injury of more than 50 others, according to Palestinian news agency WAFA.

Footage shows the wounded and deceased arriving at Al-Aqsa Martyrs Hospital, as well as the destruction inflicted on Abu al-Jaouni School in Nuseirat Camp.

According to the Israeli military, it "conducted an airstrike near the school in central Gaza targeting militants active in the area." The army stated that "the IAF struck several terrorists operating in structures located in the area of UNRWA's Abu al-Jaouni School in the central Gaza Strip," adding that "numerous steps were taken in order to mitigate the risk of harming civilians."

In response, Hamas denied the presence of its fighters at the site, stating in a statement published on its Telegram channel: "The claim by the terrorist occupying army of the presence of resistance elements in Abu al-Jaouni School, which was the site of a heinous massacre today resulting in sixteen martyrs and dozens of injured displaced unarmed civilians, is pure falsehood and deceit. This criminal enemy seeks to justify and market its crimes to the public and conceal its clear objectives of exterminating our Palestinian people and destroying all aspects of life in the Gaza Strip."

The Hamas-Israel war erupted after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

In the enclave, the IDF launched a large-scale campaign of airstrikes and ground incursions, killing 38,098 Palestinians and injuring 87,705 others as of the time of publication.
