Description

Eight Ajax fans were arrested in Amsterdam on Sunday as clashes erupted between riot police officers and Ajax fans, who protested against ongoing police strikes that led to the cancellation of the club's second straight match.

Fans could be seen clashing with police, attempting to break into the police station on Marnixstraat, and later lighting smoke flares in front of Leidseplein, chanting slogans and waving Ajax Football Club flags to document their protest.

Footage also shows several protesters being detained and escorted to police vehicles by officers.

The Ajax vs. FC Utrecht match, scheduled for Sunday at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, was cancelled by Amsterdam's deputy mayor, the police, and the public prosecutor due to a planned police strike.

The strike, linked to early retirement protests, left the authorities without police presence, leading to concerns about players, fans, and public safety.

This marks the second Ajax game cancelled in succession due to police strikes. Previously, Rotterdam Mayor Ahmed Aboutaleb cancelled the Feyenoord vs. Ajax match, originally set for September 1 at De Kuip, also due to a police strike announced on the day.
