Residents of a destroyed UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) school in Gaza's Khan Yunis said that they 'lived in fear' and were 'bombed by the Israeli warplanes and tanks.'
Footage filmed on Friday features the scale of destruction that hit many schools and infrastructure in the area, as well as locals carrying their belongings and leaving. Piles of rubble and destroyed cars can also be seen.
"I came here with my children, brothers, and some relatives. For the next three days, we were besieged but we stayed because it was supposed to be a safe place. After that, the Israeli tanks broke in and fired at us. Everything here was damaged," said Maysaa Abu Sahloul, a displaced woman.
According to the UNRWA report published in October 2023, more than 220,000 Palestinians sought refuge inside 88 of its schools across the Gaza Strip, with the number of refugees steadily increasing due to the Israeli airstrikes on the besieged enclave.
According to Israeli media outlets, the IDF released audio recordings that it says 'incriminate two additional UNRWA employees' who allegedly participated in the Hamas-led October 7 attack on Israel. Earlier, Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant named 12 other UNRWA staffers whom it said participated in the attack.
Philippe Lazzarini, the head of UNRWA, warned on Monday in a letter to the General Assembly's president that his agency's ability to carry out its mandate is 'seriously threatened,' adding that Israel has provided no evidence against his former employees.
