Description

88 unidentified bodies have been buried after they were brought to Khan Younis, following reports of a handover from Israeli forces.

Footage filmed on Thursday shows civil defence crews loading bodies onto a bulldozer and transporting them to the mass burial site. Several families attended in an attempt to identify the remains of their missing or deceased relatives.

"Regarding the container behind me, which was received yesterday from the Zionist occupation force via the Karam Abu Salem crossing, it was handed over to the Ministry of Health... Having received the bodies, they needed to be buried because they began to decompose and smell after the ice melted," said Lieutenant Colonel Samer Yasine Hamad, Director of Forensic Evidence in Khan Younis Governorate.

Ali Ashour, another respondent, said that he had come to search for his son's body, who had been missing for four months. "Today, when I learnt about the bodies of martyrs who were delivered, I came to look for my son’s body. Maybe his body is among them, but deep in my heart I don’t want to find him," the man added.

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, it had received "88 bodies, with no data or information that can help to recognise the bodies" from Israel through the Karam Abu Salem crossing.

Israel has not commented on the reports about the return of the bodies at the time of publication.

Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that over 41,000 people had been killed at time of publication.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
