A supporter of Serbian professional tennis player Novak Djokovic and a few photographers were waiting at the arrival area of Melbourne Airport on Wednesday after the tennis star was brought into a room upon landing, reportedly for visa issues.
Novak Djokovic arrived at Melbourne Airport on January 5, where he remains detained, according to local sources.
Djokovic had been granted an exemption permit to enter the country by the Australian government to participate in the Australian Open, despite not being vaccinated. Nonetheless, the tennis player was detained upon landing, and his visa status remains still uncertain.
"First, to let him come here. And then, all of a sudden, they changed their decision. They are telling [him], you have to stay here until we clarify your visa status. So, it is really telling me, as somebody who is just a normal person, that something is wrong with this government because they are not doing the job properly", said a tennis fan waiting at the airport.
No official decision on his visa status has been announced yet. Meanwhile, it remains unclear whether the Serbian tennis player will be able to participate in the Australian Open or not.
