Description

Tens of thousands of people gathered in central Algiers for the 12th consecutive Friday to demand the departure of the country's ruling elite. Demonstrators say too may officials from the circle of former leader Abdelaziz Bouteflika remain in power.

"This mafia should be brought to justice otherwise the country will drown in economic problems. Things should change," said one protester.

Demonstrations in Algeria began in February as the 82-year-old Abdelaziz Bouteflika was expected to announce he would run for a fifth term in office. He was forced to resign on April, 2. A week later, parliament appointed Abdelkader Bensalah the interim president for the next three months.

A new presidential election is scheduled to take place in Algeria in July.
