A recently unveiled robot coffee machine, known as ‘Ella’, was demonstrated on Wednesday at Tokyo station, serving up hot cups of coffee at-speed to commuters.
The machine, developed by Singaporean firm Crown Digital, uses a robotic arm to brew up to 40 varieties of coffee at an impressive delivery speed of 200 cups of coffee per hour, as per the manufacturer’s claim.
Customers place their orders using the touch screen and can pay contactless with their smartphones reducing the contact between baristas and customers, a particular concern during the COVID-19 global pandemic.
“It takes about a minute and a half from the time you place your order to the time you receive your coffee,” said Yutaro Kuryu, senior business development manager at East Japan Railway Company, which has an investment stake in Crown Digital.
“So, if you are busy, you can pick up your coffee by mobile order app so that you can receive it as soon as you arrive at the location,” added Kuryu.
The machine, which was first unveiled on December 8, is expected to stay and serve coffees at Tokyo and Yokohama stations until February 28 2022.
