٠٠:٠١:٣٧US President Joe Biden had his first phone call with Putin on Tuesday to discuss the extension of New START nuclear arms control treaty and also to 'raise matters of concerns,' White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a press conference in Washington DC.
The concerns Biden raised during the call include the Alexei Navalny case, SolarWinds hack, reports of Russia placing bounties on United States soldiers in Afghanistan, and the treatment of protesters by Russian security forces.
"His [Biden's] intention was also to make clear that the United States will act firmly in defence of our national interests in response to malign actions by Russia," Psaki told the press.
Psaki also said that Biden continues to believe that Nord Stream 2 is a 'bad deal for Europe' and stressed the president will discuss the matter with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. "We're aware that the previous administration imposed new restrictions on activities related to the pipeline under the National Defense Authorization Act, and we will be reviewing those measures. And so he looks forward to continuing to consult with our European partners on this issue," Psaki said.
