Description

Russian Presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov said that the Kremlin had held no talks with Telegram CEO and founder Pavel Durov and that he had not met with Russian President Vladimir Putin, during a briefing with reporters on Friday.

"There were no talks between Durov and the Kremlin. As for the fact that he visited Russia - he is a Russian citizen. He travels freely. Of course he visited Russia," Peskov explained.

He added that as far as he knew, Durov had also never met with Vladimir Putin.

Durov was detained at Le Bourget airport in France on Saturday, August 24, and released on Thursday after being placed under judicial supervision. Bail was set at 5 million euros, subject to a travel ban preventing him from leaving France.

The case involves allegations of allowing 'illicit transactions by an organised gang', 'complicity in criminal distribution of sexual images of children' and 'refusal to communicate with the authorities'.

Durov's own lawyer David-Olivier Kaminski claimed it was "absurd to say that a platform or its boss are responsible for any abuse" carried out on that platform. He added that Telegram was conforming to all European laws.

The Telegram CEO - who was born in Russia but holds French, UAE and St Kitts and Nevis citizenships - is required to report to a police station twice a week, but his current whereabouts are unknown.
