Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov was seen shaking hands with Chinese leader Xi Jinping ahead of talks in Beijing on Tuesday.
"I’m pleased and honoured to convey to you the best greetings of Russian President Vladimir Putin. He highly appreciated your congratulatory message on the presidential election results that took place in March this year," Lavrov told him.
The Russian minister also spoke of the developments in bilateral relations during Xi Jinping's tenure.
"We would like to express our highest appreciation and admiration for the successes achieved over these years, above all over the past decade under your leadership," Lavrov stated. "I hope that we will celebrate the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations with China and will be ready to implement new strategic tasks set by our leaders."
Meanwhile, Xi Jinping praised the friendly relations between Russia and China and asked Lavrov to convey his sincere greetings to Putin as well.
"First, please extend my sincere greetings to Russian President Vladimir Putin. You are an experienced Russian diplomat and a long-time friend of the Chinese people. Over the years, you have done a lot of fruitful work to promote Sino-Russian relations and multifaceted bilateral co-operation. I greatly appreciate this," the Chinese president added.
Xi Jinping emphasised that the two countries 'have embarked on a new path of peaceful co-existence and mutually beneficial co-operation between the two major neighbouring powers', which 'has played a constructive role in ensuring international justice'.
This meeting took place during Lavrov's official visit to Beijing from April 8-9.
