Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia attached 'great importance to partnership co-operation' within the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO), while addressing a meeting of the organisation's Heads of State Council in Astana on Thursday.
"Russia attaches great importance to partnership co-operation within the SCO. We are pleased to note that this interaction continues to develop steadily on the principles of equal rights, consideration of each other's interests, respect for cultural and civilisational diversity, and the search for collegial solutions to pressing security issues," Putin stressed.
The Russian president also congratulated his Belarusian counterpart Alexander Lukashenko on the country being granted the status of 'fully-fledged member' of the SCO.
The 24th SCO Heads of State Council meeting chaired by Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev is scheduled for July 3-4.
Leaders are expected to discuss the results of the SCO's activities for 2023-2024 and address co-operation in the political, security, economic and humanitarian spheres.
After the summit in Kazakhstan, the organisation’s presidency for 2024-2025 will pass to China.
The SCO now comprises 10 member states, 14 dialogue partners and two observer countries.
