Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov met with his Algerian counterpart Ahmed Attaf on the sidelines of the 79th session of the UN General Assembly in New York, Saturday.

"Monday? <...> So you will enjoy the weekend," Lavrov said after learning that his colleague's speech at the general debate would not take place until September 30.

According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, the top diplomats held discussions on the potential for developing a strategic partnership between the two countries. They also exchanged views on a number of current issues, "with a particular focus on the intensifying conflict in the Arab-Israeli region and the situation in the Sahara-Sahel zone".

Lavrov arrived in New York on Wednesday to take part in events at the UN General Assembly. Over the first three days, the diplomat held 25 bilateral meetings, including the traditional conversation with the organisation's Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and also took part in multilateral events through the CSTO, BRICS and the Group of Friends in the Defence of the UN Charter. The Minister is scheduled to address the general debate of the 79th session of the General Assembly on Saturday.
