President Vladimir Putin said that the West's refusal to use Russian energy and the sanctions that came with it were not moral or particularly sensible, during the Eastern Economic Forum (EEF) plenary session in Vladivostok on Thursday.
"Our adversaries and those who introduce the illegal restrictions mentioned by the Vice Chairman of the People's Republic of China are doing this not from a pure heart, not from great intelligence, as they say in such cases. Because there is no result. What are they guided by? With arrogance and self-confidence," the head of state claimed.
The president also claimed that it would be impossible to shut down Russia's energy industry, as Western powers had tried to do.
"No matter who and how tries to shut down our energy sector, it is impossible because extraction is at its limit according to the needs of the global market. It's just impossible, you understand? It's impossible. You can achieve… Let's imagine that they took everything tomorrow and shut down everything - our gas, oil, and so on. But the global economy will not withstand such a shutdown. Prices will just skyrocket, and people will still buy," Putin added.
Western nations and blocs, including the EU, have introduced a number of sanctions packages on Russian, and attempted to divest of Russian energy supplies, following the 2022 Ukraine conflict. Moscow has repeatedly claimed that such moves hit those imposing the restrictions harder than the intended target.
The IX Eastern Economic Forum is scheduled for September 3-6 in Vladivostok. Delegations from 62 countries, including China, India and African nations, are taking part in the events. The forum is aimed at creating and strengthening ties between Russian and foreign investment communities.
