“Our relations have never changed - it has been 60 years, and Algeria has always supported Russia," he said. "There may be foreign pressure on us today, but it can never affect our relations. First, we have to maintain our independence - it is thanks to the support of the Russian Federation, which provides us with weapons, so that we can maintain our independence in this challenging environment.”
The Algerian leader also called for his country’s accession to the BRICS group (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) to be accelerated.
"As you know, the world situation is very tense. It is necessary that we accelerate the process, that we are part of the BRICS group, and that we do not accept dollars or euros," he said.
Meanwhile, Putin noted that Algeria was one of Russia’s three leading partners on the African continent.
"Russian-Algerian co-operation is now truly multidimensional and has considerable potential for further development," the Russian president added.
The Algerian leader arrived in Moscow for a state visit on Tuesday. On the same day, Putin and Tebboune held talks in narrow and extended formats and signed documents, including the Declaration on Deepening the Strategic Partnership between the countries. Tebboune is also expected to take part in the St Petersburg International Economic Forum (SPIEF).
