Residents of Russia's Leningrad region were treated to a dazzling natural spectacle on Thursday as the Northern Lights appeared in the skies over the village of Soginitsy.
Footage shows the skies filled with shimmering lights and colours over the church of 'St Nicholas the Wonderworker'.
"Even before the aurora appeared in the sky, we set up the equipment at the right angle and lay low. It didn't take long for the aurora to appear, first rolling bright beams and bands across the northern horizon and then playing out overhead," said eyewitnesses.
According to the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute, the magnetic storm of 12-13 September that caused the aurora borealis has ended.
The aurora borealis is an illumination of the upper layers of the Earth's atmosphere that occurs in the circumpolar regions during periods of geomagnetic activity. Auroras last from tens of minutes to several days.
