A passenger train traveling from Vorkuta to Novorossiysk derailed near the town of Inta in the Komi Republic in northwest Russia, Russian Railways reported on Wednesday.

Footage shows overturned train carriages lying on the ground near the tracks, with passengers standing on top of and around the stricken carriages.

"On 26 June at 18:12 (Moscow time), nine carriages of passenger train No. 511 left the tracks at the Inta-1-Ugolniy railroad haul of the Northern Railway (Komi Republic). Emergency services have been sent to the scene. Assistance is being provided to the passengers," the report said.

According to Russian Railways, a total of 232 passengers were aboard the 14 carriage train. It was on its way from Vorkuta, a town just above the Arctic Circle, to the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk in southern Russia.

"Information at the time of publication shows that there were no casualties in the accident. Russian Railways will provide assistance to all the injured. The accident involving train No. 511 Vorkuta-Novorossiysk was allegedly caused by the erosion of the railbed due to heavy downpours. Two recovery trains have been sent to the site," Russian Railways reported.

The Health Ministry of the Komi Republic said that two Mi-8 helicopters with doctors and paramedics onboard departed to the accident scene to assist the victims.
