Burkina Faso’s Foreign Minister Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore stated that co-operation with Moscow would help Sahel countries "abandon the monopoly of Western countries and move towards a multipolar system", speaking after a meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, Saturday.
"Russia is a friendly country, it is our strategic partner," he said. "Co-operation with it will allow us to abandon the monopoly of Western countries and move towards a multipolar system where the Sahel countries would have more opportunities."
In addition, Traore highlighted the progress in the relations between the two countries.
"We are making great progress together, we have many areas of co-operation. We agreed to work on strengthening our co-operation in economy, trade, and also energy. I think that relations between Russia and Burkina Faso, as well as with all the countries of the Alliance of Sahel States, have very good prospects," the minister said.
According to the Russian Foreign Ministry, top diplomats discussed regional and international issues and reaffirmed their commitment to developing bilateral co-operation in trade, economic, and humanitarian spheres. Following the talks, Traore and Lavrov signed a joint statement on the non-deployment of weapons in outer space.
