Description

Missiles were seen in the sky over Haifa and Herzliya as Iran launched a massive attack on Israel on Tuesday shortly after the IDF started a ground offensive in Lebanon.

Footage shows rockets lighting up the night sky and missiles being fired to intercept the attack while sirens can be heard in the background.

The Israeli army said that Iran fired 180 projectiles with IDF chief Hagari calling it a 'serious attack' and vowing consequences.

Many of the missiles were intercepted and no fatalities were reported at the time of publication.

According to the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) the decision for the launch has been made by Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and was backed by Iran's security council and defence ministry. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the action was a 'decisive response' in defence of 'the interests and citizens of Iran'. Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said that Iran made a 'big mistake' and 'will pay for it'. US President Joe Biden reaffirmed Washington's support for Israel and called the attack 'defeated and ineffective'.

The escalation comes after the killing of Hezbollah's leader last week and the launch of an Israeli ground offensive in Lebanon. The militant group on Saturday confirmed the death of 64-year-old Secretary-General Hassan Nasrallah, following an Israeli airstrike on Friday on Hezbollah's central headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs.

On Monday, September 23, the IDF launched a military operation with airstrikes on Hezbollah positions dubbed 'Operation Northern Arrows'. The attacks have claimed the lives of over 1,000 people since Monday, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health at the time of publication. The shelling targeted several areas in the south: the Bekaa Valley, Mount Lebanon, and Beirut.

Tensions in southern Lebanon have escalated in mid-September following the mass explosions of pagers used by Hezbollah and the Israeli shelling of Beirut's southern suburb, which killed the group's senior commander, Ibrahim Aqeel, along with 60 others. Hezbollah, in response, launched rocket attacks on areas in northern Israel.

Hezbollah, Lebanese, and Palestinian factions have been exchanging cross-border shelling with the Israeli forces since October 8, one day after the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

Earlier in the year, the IRGC launched hundreds of drones and missiles towards Israel on April 13, in Tehran’s first direct attack on the Jewish state, signalling a major escalation of tensions in the region.

The attack came as a response to the alleged Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1, which killed at least seven members of the IRGC, including a senior Quds Force commander.
