Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu claimed that Iran had made a 'big mistake' after a wave of missiles were launched towards Israel on Tuesday, speaking from Jerusalem.

"This evening, Iran made a big mistake - and it will pay for it. The regime in Tehran does not understand our determination to defend ourselves and to exact a price from our enemies…We will keep to the rule we have determined: Whoever attacks us - we attack them. This is true wherever we fight the axis of evil," he said.

He said the evening assault had 'failed' and was 'thwarted thanks to Israel's air defence array, which is the most advanced in the world'.

"I commend the IDF for the impressive achievement. It was also thwarted thanks to your alertness and responsibility, citizens of Israel. I also thank the US for its support in our defensive effort," he added.

Netanyahu also extended his condolences to the families of the six people killed in an 'abhorrent terrorist attack' in Jaffa the same night.

Earlier, the IDF stated that 180 missiles were launched from Iran, coming down in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other areas. Two injuries were reported, as well as the death of a Palestinian man in the West Bank.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps said the strikes were in response to the assassinations of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah and IRGC commander Abbas Nilforoshan in Lebanon, as well as the death of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Israel has never commented on the latter's killing.

In April, the IRGC launched hundreds of drones and missiles towards Israel following a suspected Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus. On Tuesday, Israel also began a 'limited and targeted' ground incursion into Lebanon, following a week-long campaign of airstrikes in the south of the country.
