Description

Hundreds of football fans turned out at Tbilisi airport to give the Georgian national team a hero's welcome, after they made it to the last 16 of the 2024 Euros in Germany.

"All of us, football fans, may have been waiting for this moment, this result for years," said Khatiya. "This is, indeed, the greatest achievement in the history of Georgian football, at least, that our generation saw. We came here to sincerely thank our guys for a decent and dedicated game."

Footage shows locals greeting the team bus with applause and cheers. Many of them were seen singing and wearing Georgian flags draped over their shoulders.

Tbilisi resident Ilya Macharashvili said the national team's achievement - and what it meant to Georgians - 'cannot be described in words'.

"This may be a historic chance that, thanks to our guys, the people of Georgia have got. God grant it happens again in two (next World Cup) or four years," he continued. "All this is the merit of our heroes, players, guys from the Georgian national team, who gave our country, our Georgia, such love and beauty."

Georgia beat Portugal 2-0 to finish third in their group and progress to the knockout stages. They were beaten 4-1 by Spain in the last 16, with the Spanish side progressing to the quarter finals against hosts, Germany.

The European Championship is from 14 June to 14 July.
