Description

Team of 1XPEDITION research centre found a Finnish shipwreck with the image of the mythological Leviathan at a depth of 34 metres near Konevets Island in Lake Ladoga, northwestern Russia.

Footage taken on Monday shows divers exploring the wreck and sending the treasures they found to the surface, where a research team later studied the artefacts.

One of these finds was a rare refractory brick produced in Swedish Hoganas hundreds years ago.

"In the early 20th century there was no customs border between the Grand Duchy of Finland and Europe, and it was much easier to bring bricks like this from Europe rather than from Russia. So this brick is very common here," said a member of the research centre.

"But this particular type of brick, this particular kind of brick, is quite rare. It differs both in the size of the inscription and the symbols and designs depicted on the brick," he continued.

According to the underwater research centre, the ship may have sunk due to an explosion. The image of the Leviathan was found on the ship’s sides and it is assumed that the vessel was a pirate ship.

The exploration of the sunken ship will continue as specialists are eager to find out the secrets the wreck holds.
